The Independent navigation menu allows a standalone group of pages to have its own tiered menu structure, separate from the Main Menu.

Not every site needs to use the Independent Menu. It is a good fit if, for example, you have a section of content that doesn't quite fit in with your site map, or a unit in your department needs a "subsite" of related pages that shouldn't be accessible through your main menu.

Adding, editing, and rearranging menu links are generally the same for each type of menu. Visit the following pages for information on:

Managing the Independent menu

Each top-level item in the Independent Menu creates its own menu section on the live site.

In other words, every top-level item functions like its own standalone menu. That item becomes the "parent," and pages nested beneath become its "children." When viewing the live site, visitors to this section will only see the one parent and its children. Links from other Independent Menu sections will not appear there, and vice versa.

In this example, there are three top-level items – New to Duke?, Independent Page, and Parent 1. Each of these items has its own separate menu section with its own set of nested links.
